What Does IFU Stand For?

IFU stands for Instructions for Use: the information supplied by a manufacturer that tells users how to operate a product safely and as intended. The abbreviation is most common in regulated industries such as medical devices and pharmaceuticals, where the IFU is a controlled, mandatory document.

While any product manual technically "instructs use", the abbreviation IFU belongs to regulated industries. For medical devices, regulators such as the US FDA and the EU (under the Medical Device Regulation, MDR) require manufacturers to supply instructions for use covering the device's intended purpose, correct operation, warnings, and residual risks. Similar expectations apply to in-vitro diagnostics and many pharmaceutical products, where the equivalent leaflet is often called a package insert.

Because the IFU is part of the regulatory submission and post-market surveillance record, it is version-controlled, reviewed by regulatory and clinical experts, and updated through formal change processes — unlike an ordinary consumer manual.

What an IFU typically contains

A typical medical-device IFU covers: the intended use and intended users, contraindications, step-by-step operating instructions, cleaning or reprocessing procedures, warnings and precautions, symbol explanations, storage and disposal information, and manufacturer contact details. Standardized symbols (for example those in ISO 15223-1 for device labeling) let one document serve many markets.

Illustrations do much of the communication: step diagrams showing device handling, orientation figures, and pictograms reduce dependence on translated text and lower the risk of use errors — a key concern in usability engineering (IEC 62366).
