What Does IFU Stand For?

IFU stands for Instructions for Use: the information supplied by a manufacturer that tells users how to operate a product safely and as intended. The abbreviation is most common in regulated industries such as medical devices and pharmaceuticals, where the IFU is a controlled, mandatory document.

IFU (Instructions for Use)

Where the term IFU is used

While any product manual technically "instructs use", the abbreviation IFU belongs to regulated industries. For medical devices, regulators such as the US FDA and the EU (under the Medical Device Regulation, MDR) require manufacturers to supply instructions for use covering the device's intended purpose, correct operation, warnings, and residual risks. Similar expectations apply to in-vitro diagnostics and many pharmaceutical products, where the equivalent leaflet is often called a package insert.

Because the IFU is part of the regulatory submission and post-market surveillance record, it is version-controlled, reviewed by regulatory and clinical experts, and updated through formal change processes — unlike an ordinary consumer manual.

What an IFU typically contains

A typical medical-device IFU covers: the intended use and intended users, contraindications, step-by-step operating instructions, cleaning or reprocessing procedures, warnings and precautions, symbol explanations, storage and disposal information, and manufacturer contact details. Standardized symbols (for example those in ISO 15223-1 for device labeling) let one document serve many markets.

Illustrations do much of the communication: step diagrams showing device handling, orientation figures, and pictograms reduce dependence on translated text and lower the risk of use errors — a key concern in usability engineering (IEC 62366).

Electronic IFUs (eIFU) are increasingly accepted alongside paper: several jurisdictions allow manufacturers to supply instructions electronically for certain device categories, provided users can still request a paper copy. The content requirements do not change — only the delivery format does.

How IFU illustrations are produced

IFU figures are traditionally drawn by specialist medical illustrators from device photos or CAD, then reviewed by regulatory, clinical, and human-factors teams before release. That review step is non-negotiable: the figures are part of a controlled document.

AI illustration tools can accelerate the drafting stage by generating clean, consistent line drawings from device photos. ManualFig produces draft figures for exactly this workflow — the drafts still go through your expert and regulatory review before they appear in a released IFU.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an IFU and a user manual?

Functionally they overlap, but an IFU is a regulated, controlled document required for products like medical devices, with content shaped by regulation and reviewed through formal change control. A user manual for a consumer product has no such regulatory status.

Do all medical devices need an IFU?

Most do. In the EU, the MDR allows limited exceptions — for example, some Class I and IIa devices may omit printed instructions if they can be used safely without them. Requirements vary by market and device class, so regulatory experts make the final call.

Can AI-generated illustrations be used in an IFU?

AI tools are well suited to drafting IFU figures quickly and consistently, but every figure must still pass your organization's regulatory, clinical, and usability review before release. Treat AI output as a fast first draft for expert review, not a finished controlled document.
