What Is a Packaging Insert?

A packaging insert (or package insert) is any printed material placed inside a product's packaging — from thank-you cards, quick start sheets, and warranty leaflets in consumer products to the regulated leaflet that documents usage, dosage, and warnings for pharmaceuticals.

Packaging Insert

Two meanings: marketing insert vs regulated insert

In e-commerce and consumer goods, "packaging insert" usually means the small printed pieces sellers add to the box: thank-you and review-request cards, discount codes, setup or care instructions, and warranty registration cards. Their job is to improve the unboxing experience, cut support tickets, and drive repeat purchases.

In pharmaceuticals, the "package insert" is something else entirely: the regulated leaflet (called prescribing information in the US, or the patient information leaflet in the EU) that documents indications, dosage, contraindications, and adverse effects. Its content is dictated and reviewed by regulators, not by marketing.

What makes a product insert effective

For consumer inserts, the winning formula is one card, one job: a setup card shows the three steps to first use, a care card shows how to clean or store the product, a warranty card shows how to register. Visual, numbered instructions outperform paragraphs, especially for products sold across language markets.

Inserts are also the cheapest place to prevent support contacts and negative reviews: a single clear diagram of the most-misunderstood step (battery orientation, filter direction, app pairing) pays for its printing many times over.

When to use an insert and how they are produced

Use an insert whenever the full manual is too much and the box moment matters: first-use setup, safety reminders, care instructions, or accessory cross-sells. Sellers on marketplaces should check platform rules — Amazon, for example, prohibits inserts that ask for positive reviews or divert customers off-platform.

Production is straightforward print design, but the illustrations decide the quality. Teams photograph the product, convert the photos to clean line drawings for the instruction panels, then lay out the card at postcard or A6 size with minimal text.

Sizing follows the box, not the document: a common approach is to match the insert to the largest inner face of the packaging so it sits flat on top of the product and is the first thing the customer sees on opening.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a packaging insert and an IFU?

An IFU (instructions for use) is a regulated document required for products like medical devices, with formally controlled content. A consumer packaging insert is discretionary marketing or instructional material. The pharmaceutical "package insert" is closer to an IFU: it is regulated prescribing information.

Are packaging inserts allowed on Amazon?

Yes, with limits. Instructional inserts, warranty cards, and neutral contact information are fine. Inserts that request positive reviews, offer incentives for reviews, or push buyers to purchase off Amazon violate the platform's policies.

Design instruction inserts that get used

ManualFig turns product photos into the compact, clear instruction graphics a packaging insert needs — sized for cards, not manuals.
